The Team 18 crew were working into the night in the Mount Panorama pit lane after a nasty accident for David Reynolds in Qualifying for this weekend’s Repco Bathurst 1000. (Edit VM: the car is ready to go we believe).

Mark Winterbottom qualified in 22nd, as he faced challenges with the balance of the DEWALT Camaro.

Reynolds put in a lap prior that was enough to start 21st for the Great Race on Sunday.

Reynolds was on his second flying lap on a fresh set of rubber when his Camaro stepped out sharply through the Esses. Reynolds was a passenger as the car rode the concrete fence and came to a stop before the dipper.

Reynolds was taken to the medical centre and was fortunately cleared of any injuries.

The team will assess the damage on the TRADIE Beer Camaro and aim to fix it overnight in preparation for the Repco Bathurst 1000 on Sunday.

Saturday’s action features two more hour long practice sessions at 10:05am and 1:10pm AEDT respectively.

All the action can be viewed live on Channel 7, Fox Sports and Kayo.

“We just got slower and slower as the week’s gone on. We will go back to where we think we’re most competitive and turn it into a good race car. It’s a lot better race car than a qualifying car.

“We’ve got three more sessions to go to make it a really good race car, and if we can do that, it doesn’t matter where you start in this race.”

Michael Caruso, co-driver #18 DEWALT Racing Team 18 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

“ Not the qualifying we were after. We haven’t been able to progress with our setup, which is reflective of our position, but we do have an opportunity tomorrow with a couple of practice sessions before the big race on Sunday. We’ll keep working on it and do the most that we can.”

Practice 4: 6th
Qualifying: 21st

“Very challenging day. I’m very disappointed with what happened.

“That’s my favourite session of the year, qualifying at Bathurst. You get 50 minutes of track time, four sets of tyres, and just nothing but fun.

“Today my car was fast. It should have been in the top few, I think. It was a little bit uneasy to drive. The accident in the data, they said I did everything exactly the same. I actually went in there a little bit slower than the lap before. They think a car ran off in front of me and then dragged some stuff on the track and it caught me out.

“It looks like my car’s a bit second hand. There’s a lot of damage, especially in that front right corner. We’re going get two Waverley Forklifts to pull them apart, stretch the car out. We’ll fix it and see how we go tomorrow.”

Warren Luff, co-driver #20 TRADIE Beer Racing Team 18 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

“I’m glad Dave’s okay. We’ve got plenty of time between now and Sunday. We know we’ve got a great team of guys and girls here. They’re going through it right now. We’ll get it back out there. Yeah, we’ll be fine.

“It’s disappointing, but Dave was pushing hard. He was there in the ten, he was on a lap that was a lot quicker that would have potentially put him to the top of the timesheet. That’s the idea of qualifying. You’ve got to go out there and you’ve got to try hard and it just didn’t quite work out, but we’ll be out there to fight hard on Sunday and I’m sure we’ll be fine.”

Adrian Burgess, Team Principal – Team 18

“The front clip’s obviously destroyed and it’s pushed the bottom leg back into the chassis a fair way.

“The front has been stripped, engine’s being fixed, the inlet system came off, that’s been fixed, and we’re currently just attempting to fix and stretch the chassis back.

“it will be a late night, but it’s all fixable.”
