EIGHTH FOR REYNOLDS IN TEAM 18 DEBUT

TRADIE Beer Racing’s David Reynolds and DEWALT Racing’s Mark Winterbottom placed eighth and 12th respectively in Race 1 of the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship at the Bathurst 500.

The day started extremely strongly for Reynolds, qualifying a stunning third position in his maiden hit out with the team and progressing through to the Top 10 Shootout.

However, a puncture to his right rear tyre on his out lap meant he had to abort his Top 10 Shootout lap, and started tenth.

Winterbottom showed similar pace to Reynolds in qualified, but started in 19th after he came across traffic on his push lap.

Both drivers got off to a strong start, with Reynolds and Winterbottom pitting on Lap 6 and 88 respectively for a short fill.

They continued worked their way forwards through strategy and well-executed pit stops in the lane, and emerged after their final pit stops in ninth and 13th respectively. 

Both drivers moved up a position when Waters’ retired from the race in the closing stages, and while they closed their gaps to the cars ahead, a late race Full Course Yellow interruption prevented further gains as the race ultimately finished under safety car conditions.

Team 18 return to action tomorrow for Qualifying at 9:30am AEDT, before a Top 10 Shootout to set the grid for Race 1, kicking off at 3:05pm. All the action can be viewed live on Channel 7, Fox Sports and Kayo. Check your local guides for further details.

“Not bad race pace, I had really good tyre deg so it was good to move up the field and make the tyre last longer over a stint, 

“I enjoyed working with the engineers, just trying to come up with the toolbox we’ve got. The philosophy has changed so we’re just trying to keep the strengths I think we’ve got and fix our weaknesses for tomorrow.

“Dave’s car was pretty quick which is encouraging, but we’ll get to work tonight and find a bit more pace for tomorrow.

“Today was pretty up and down, like the highs of highs from qualifying third for the shootout, which was amazing. We’re still a little bit off the Red Bull cars, but they were 1-2, so we were sort of the next best, so that’s a huge tick in the box to do that job straight out the gate for us. 

“Then we turned up the shootout, and l got to the end of pit lane, and the tyre’s flat, which has never happened before. I’ve never seen anything like that before but, must have run over something or something funny happened, it’s just bad luck, so we ended up starting tenth for the race.

“I got a reasonable start. Worked my absolute ass off and tried to undercut a lot of people and probably burnt the tyres up too much. I lost a bit of time trying to defend to Matt and then catching Anton, passing Anton, and then realising that I probably went too hard out the gate on my tyres, so I was battling a bit until the next stop. We lost a second, second and a half in pit lane through a bit of fuel stuff and popped out just behind Fullwood and pretty much stayed there. 

“I didn’t have much else, but in hindsight, if we had a better race, I could have ended up in the top five, I think. So all in all, it was a pretty fun day and still heaps to work on with a new team.”
