DAVISON’S DECISIVE DRIVE TO VICTORY AT SANDOWN RACEWAY

Will Davison converted a pole position to what was essentially a flag to flag victory in Race 24 of the 2022 Repco Supercars Championship at the Penrite Sandown Supersprint.

Series leader and reigning champions Shane van Gisbergen started alongside the #17 Shell V-Power Mustang but had no answer as Davison took a lead into the first corner and then skipped away from the opposition for the majority of the race.

Save for the pit stop cycle, Davison held control of the front position only to lose the lead momentarily when Cameron Waters ran a longer opening stint.

An early stop for fellow Shell V-Power driver Anton De Pasquale saw the #11 run a series of fast laps which threatened to undercut van Gisbergen and forced the Red Bull Ampol Racing Commodore into a relatively early stop. Will Brown, had been running with the leaders and also stopped in an effort to maintain third place, only to find the rear bumper of the second Shell V-Power Mustang ahead.

Davison took the win from van Gisbergen and De Pasquale, while Brown held on to 4th at the chequered flag after a sometimes heated defence of the position from Waters in the closing stages of the race.

Van Gisbergen’s fellow Red Bull Ampol driver Broc Feeney was forced to play catch up after an opening lap touch had him into the gravel at the Dandenong Road corner. Andre Heimgartner was adjudged to have initiated the incident and was given a 15 second penalty, which was served at the same time as his compulsory pit stop.

DRIVER QUOTES:

DAVISON QUOTE
“It was a really special day to be able to continue yesterday’s form from practice to a really tricky Qualifying session today with the conditions. To be on pole was amazing and to back it up with a good start and a fast race car was awesome.

“It’s obviously an area where we haven’t converted enough pole positions to wins, so it’s a big relief to do so today, in a convincing fashion, it’s the stuff you dream of.

“To have Anton up there on the podium with me as well, it was an awesome day for the team.”

DE PASQUALE QUOTE
“It was a good day, I was able to make up some positions in the shootout, which made life easier come the race.

“The race was pretty straightforward, we stopped on the early side and made a spot up doing that and I had quite a good car. We’ll try to qualify a little bit better tomorrow and go again.”

Shane van Gisbergen – Car #97
“I tried hard to battle with Will (Davison) but he was very fast today. I just couldn’t quite hang with him and then after the pit stop he was miles in front of me. I tried to give it everything we had but we weren’t quite quick enough. I hope we can get a bit more pace out of the car tomorrow because the guys next door are very quick. They had a lot more rear traction then us, so that’s something we’ll need to work on – I may have gone a bit too hard in that first stint too but these are things we’ll discuss tonight. It was still a reasonably tight race but hopefully we can put on a better show for everyone tomorrow.”

Broc Feeney – Car #88
“Overall, qualifying was pretty good. We were right in the mix for the whole session, and the biggest thing is we managed to get a heap of laps in. I started to build a bit of a rhythm and got into the shootout. I did a really good lap in the shootout and I was really happy with everything, but we managed to get a kerb strike over the top of the hill which was a shame because we would have been P3 on the grid, and ultimately it put us back to P10 which put us back in the mix for the race. In the race, I got a blinding start and we were in a good position on the first lap. I thought I had the speed to move up a few spots today but I got speared off on the first lap which was pretty silly. We got back going again and I struggled in the first stint, but once we put new tyres on at the end we managed to build momentum – I think I passed five cars in one lap so there was some cool battles and I managed to get back to P14. I got the fastest lap and some points but the biggest thing is to keep finishing. It’s a shame the way today played out but we’ll reset and go again tomorrow.”
