Chaz Mostert (No. 55 Supercheap Auto Ford Mustang) and Will Davison (No. 23 Milwaukee Racing Ford Mustang) posted the second and third quickest laps in Practice 1 from the Perth SuperNight, the sole Virgin Australia Supercars session on Thursday.

On a newly re-paved Barbagallo Wanneroo Raceway, drivers got their first chance to sample the 2.42-kilometre circuit in evening conditions, unofficially breaking the lap record set in 2004. Lee Holdsworth (No. 5 The Bottle-O Ford Mustang) placed sixth overall after mid-session changes yielding promising results, and Cameron Waters (No. 6 Monster Energy Ford Mustang) placed tenth.

The Perth SuperNight continues Friday with Practice 2 at 12:45 p.m. AWST, followed by knockout qualifying at 3:25 and Race 11 at 6:45, under the lights.

“We were uncompetitive out of the gate, which was strange, but as it was we were probably down on tyre quality. We made a few changes and we definitely improved the car before we went to the next set, and made a massive gain on a better quality tyre, similar to the other guys, and I was pleased. The track’s mega grippy and I feel like we’ve got a car that’s in the window. I think the difference between the balance at night compared to the day tomorrow in qualifying will be a fair difference, so we just need to make sure we’re not caught out by that.”

“The highlight of my day was probably beating Lee at golf; honestly the car wasn’t very good tonight. We tried a few things and they didn’t work, but that’s okay, it was only one practice and I’m frustrated with P10. We’ve got some quick team mates and we know what we need to tune up so I’m confident we’ll be fine come tomorrow.”

“First of all I wish we could do all our races night racing, because I actually had time to play nine holes of golf today, so that was fantastic. Good pre-running into today’s practice, so that was fantastic. For me, it’s awesome, I kind of think about the old Calder Park days, where you used to watch the main straight lit up and the rest was pretty dark, so I actually kind of like that there (are) some patches out there. I think it’s very old school, and it’s the same as Eastern Creek; where there are patches, you actually feel like you’re going so quick in this night patch, and then you’re coming up on this daylight, it’s super cool. It feels like you’re in some super, hyper, fast tunnel, I like it. I feel like I’m in ‘Tron’ or something.”

“The car’s doing everything right, I’m just trying to get to the limit of the car, because the limit is super high, and like anything at night it sort of magnifies it, like you’re fast forward on the PlayStation a little bit. You had to adapt to your lines and quite a bit of stuff from previous years here. The car turns a lot better, so you can certainly attack the corners in a couple of very different ways, all a bit backwards to what we do at pretty much most events. The grip level and the technique of driving the car was fun to be honest…It’s a good start for us, obviously there’s been quite a few changes to the car, and it’s hard to tell at this stage, there’s a lot of variables coming in here, but it’s nice to know that we’ve rolled out reasonably well here.”

“There’s only so much you can take from first practice, but it’s a good start for us. It’s great to see the team getting on with the job and having a good showing. We’ll see how we handle the different conditions for qualifying tomorrow, but if tonight’s session was representative we should be on for a positive weekend.”
